Mesmerizing Screen

folding screen (2)This mesmerizing folding screen named ‘An A and Be and Not” was showed at the D3 Talents in Cologne last January. It was designed by Camilla Richter and contains different coloured sheets making up shades and transparancies. More recently it was showcased in the exhibition stand of Cappellini at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Stainless steel table

stainless steel table

Some time ago I have designed this dining table for an initiative named DIM (Design in Metal). These people are great with metal and decided to start up a furniture line. The table was inspired by my VOLT table or rather a more straightforward alternative. It has stainless steel frame and legs and for the top one can choose between glass or granite which is sunken below the edge of the frame. Unfortunately things have been a little quiet lately at DIM but hopefully they will pick up in 2013. Of course it can also be ordered here.

This meteorite called Casa da Musica has struck Porto nearly ten years ago. Praised by many as a masterpiece of Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, I was a very surprised when I visited the building earlier this month. Yes, it is an impressive if not an imposing structure. However I did come across some disturbingly disappointing aspects regarding the interior spaces. But what struck me most of all is that no one seems to point out or discuss these things. ‘It is a masterpiece, period’.

Van Nelle Factory

Just a bit further up the Schie canal from where I live is the Van Nelle factory, a modernist celebrity. Originally built in the 1920′s as a tea, coffee and tobacco processing plant, it now houses several architecture firms amongst others. I worked here for a couple of years. When looking carefully at this picture you can clearly see that the particular ‘mushroom’ columns get narrower the higher they get. They did this to save weight and materials.

Small Business Center

Non-descript small business center in the Havenstraat of the district of Delfshaven in Rotterdam. I like this building because it is carefully yet unpretentiously designed.

Town houses

House with glass facade and black window frames on Steigereiland (lit: Jetty Island) in the Amsterdamse suburb of IJburg. It was designed by architect Rowin Pietersma. Steigereiland is a quarter in which most of the house were developed by people themselves, rather unique in the Netherlands where the vast majority of the housing is produced by developers and corporations.
