Detail of an art work by Bouke IJlstra in the Rotterdam Metro station of Stadhuis (Town Hall). The artist developed an incrustation technique in the late fifties called marble niello, sometimes falsely referred to as a form of intarsia. Rather than metal like in traditional niello, he used marble to engrave and then fill with a stone paste or mortar.
