this is a snapshot blog of:

La Defense

Usually I only post things I like, but I don’t mind breaking a routine now and then. So why on earth did they call this office building in Almere (!) La Defense? It has been designed by Ben van Berkel’s UN Studio and was finished in 2004. Although it looks great on pictures and in magazines, reality for me felt a bit less glossy when I visited the building a couple of years ago. The outer cladding of the building is grey to ‘fit in with the surrounding grey buildings’ (according to the architect) and the cladding of the facades that face the courtyards is multicolored. The attempt of creating this inside-outside contrast is sympathetic but the courtyards are very unpleasant and due to the mirrored glass and lack of doors there is no visual relation between the office interiors and the courtyards whatsoever.
