van nelle by night

After three years of absence I have recently made a comeback in the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam. I have just been invited to do a freelance job here. I have worked as an architect in this marvelous former factory from 2004 until 2007 which had been turned into offices around the year 2000. Originally it was a tobacco, coffee and tea factory and was designed by Brinkman & Van der Vlugt in the 1920’s and finished in the early thirties. Revolutionary dus to its progressive approach to production and human resource policy and the way this was translated in its architecure. Technologically innovative in its use of steel and glass (one of the earliest and finest examples of glazed curtain walls).
