dressoirkast / sideboard

Last week I delivered this made-to-measure sideboard to a client nearby. They requested a sideboard that would match their REK coffee table. The sideboard is white but has fronts of beech wood: four doors and four drawers. The texture of the wood continues in the fronts over the full length of the sideboard.

Minimal Sculpture

This minimal artwork came into being unintentionally by taking some shelves off my wall. It was the result of a storage design experiment I did some years ago. The shelves were made up of three square planes perpendicular to one another and each intersected at one third of their length. Each shelve could be shoved into the openings and one would cover nine of these transparant acryclic boxes. Consequently the shelves could be positioned in various ways thus making up different configurations. I recently grew tired of them and threw the shelves away. I do like this base grid and I’ll keep it as an abstract piece of minimal art on my wall, reminiscent of Donald Judd’s work.

Minimalist desk design

DEX is a refined, compact en minimalist desk. DEX draws attention to the edges of the materials in an otherwise white composition. The end grain of the oak wood, the alternating layers of aluminium and laminate and the folded aluminium drawer fronts which form a handle. By doing so the texture and colours of the materials are subtly emphasized and the overall form of the desk becomes less significant.

NFI

Netherlands Forensic Intitute (NFI) in The Hague. It encloses six courtyards and the impressively minimalist facade consists of mat black, steel bands which protrude from the glass sections as to function as a sun screen. The meticulousness of the facade somehow corresponds with the image that one has of the work of forensic scientists. The building was designed by Claus & Kaan and completed in 2004.

Nederlands Forensisch Intituut (NFI) in Den Haag.
