OMA designed library

Seattle public library designed by Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and opened in 2004. It consists of shifted and spiralling platforms and seemingly wrapped by a net of steel and glass. I visited the building back in June 2006 and although I was very impressed, I also found the structure to be too overpowering, too imposing to really enjoy being in a library, to read, to study. I wonder what remains once the initial thrill of something so new and unconventional is gone.

Seattle openbare bibliotheek ontworpen door Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) en geopend in 2004. Het bestaat uit verschoven en spiralende plateau’s omspannen met een net van staal en glas. Ik bezocht het gebouw in Juni 2006 en hoewel ik erg onder de indruk was vond ik het gebouw ook te overweldigend en te opdringerig om echt te kunnen genieten van het zijn in een bibliotheek, om te lezen, om te studeren. Ik vroeg me af wat er overblijft als de eerste opwinding bij een eerste bezoek van zoiets nieuws en onconventioneels voorbij is.
